📍 Ouarzazate, Morocco
Ouarzazate sits at the edge of two worlds — the High Atlas Mountains behind it and the Sahara desert ahead. It's where Lawrence of Arabia was filmed. Where Gladiator's Colosseum scenes were shot. Where Game of Thrones built its cities. But beyond the film legacy, Ouarzazate is a genuinely beautiful place — ancient kasbahs, palm oases, extraordinary light and a pace of life that slows you down in the best possible way.

🏰 Aït Benhaddou — the UNESCO ksar
Morocco's most filmed location
Aït Benhaddou is a 17th-century fortified village — a ksar — built from pisé (clay and straw) on a hillside above the Ouarzazate River. It's been continuously inhabited for centuries, though most residents now live in the modern village across the river. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and has been used as a filming location for over 20 major productions.
The ksar is about 30km from Ouarzazate — a 30-minute drive or 80–100 MAD taxi each way. Entry costs 30 MAD. You can explore independently or hire a local guide at the entrance for around 100–150 MAD — worth it for the film history stories alone.
When to go: Sunrise or the last 2 hours before sunset. The pisé walls glow amber and red in low light and the shadows turn dramatic. Midday is harsh light and tour bus crowds. Go early or go late.
"Walking through Aït Benhaddou you keep recognising scenes — not because you've been here before, but because you've seen it in a dozen films without knowing where it was."
🧑🦱
Local tip: Cross the river on foot via the stepping stones (or donkey crossing in high water) rather than the bridge. The approach on foot through the palm grove gives you a completely different perspective on the ksar — the one the film crews use for wide establishing shots.
🎬 Ouarzazate — Morocco's Hollywood
Ouarzazate has been called the "Hollywood of Africa" — and it earned that name. The combination of dramatic desert landscapes, ancient kasbahs, reliable sunshine and low costs has attracted filmmakers since the 1960s. The city has two major studios — Atlas Corporation Studios and CLA Studios — that together have hosted productions worth billions of dollars.

Visiting Atlas Film Studios
Atlas Film Studios is the larger of the two studios and open to tourists. Entry is around 50 MAD — you walk through actual outdoor film sets including the Egyptian and Roman city reconstructions, props warehouses and costume displays. It's genuinely interesting even if you're not a film buff — the scale of the constructions is remarkable.
The studio is 5km from Ouarzazate city center — take a petit taxi for about 20–30 MAD. Allow 1.5–2 hours. Guides available at the entrance for 100 MAD who know which films were shot where.

✅ Things to do in Ouarzazate
1. Aït Benhaddou at sunrise — 30km, 30 MAD entry, arrive before 8am. Already covered above — non-negotiable.
2. Taourirt Kasbah — right in the city center, often overlooked for Aït Benhaddou but equally impressive. A 17th-century pasha's palace with dozens of rooms, towers and stunning carved plasterwork. Entry 20 MAD. Allow 1 hour.
3. Atlas Film Studios — walk through actual Hollywood film sets. 50 MAD entry, 5km from center.
4. Fint Oasis — see hidden gems section below. 10km, almost no tourists.
5. Draa Valley drive — the road south from Ouarzazate toward Zagora follows the Draa River through a valley of 1 million palm trees, ancient kasbahs and Berber villages. One of the most beautiful drives in Morocco. Rent a car for the day — 300–400 MAD.
6. Tifoultoute Kasbah — 10km from Ouarzazate, this kasbah was used in Lawrence of Arabia and has a restaurant with extraordinary views over the valley. Lunch with a view around 80–120 MAD.
7. Ouarzazate lake (Mansour Eddahbi) — a large reservoir 10km east of the city. Early morning it mirrors the Atlas Mountains behind it — beautiful photography spot and almost zero tourists.

💎 Hidden gems
Fint Oasis — the secret garden
10km from Ouarzazate, a dramatic gorge opens to reveal a lush palm oasis fed by a natural spring. The contrast between the ochre desert rock and the deep green of the palms is extraordinary. Almost no tourists come here despite being so close to the city. Walk through the palm groves, visit the small Berber village, eat lunch at the simple café by the spring. Taxi there and back costs about 80–100 MAD total. This is the hidden gem of Ouarzazate.
Aït Benhaddou at night — completely different
The ksar is officially closed after sunset but you can view it from across the river in the modern village — completely illuminated against the dark sky, the clay walls glowing gold. Bring a tripod. The reflection in the river when water levels are right is extraordinary. Zero tourists, extraordinary atmosphere. Some guesthouses in the village have rooftop terraces with this exact view — ask specifically when booking.
The Rose Valley — Kelaat M'Gouna
100km northeast of Ouarzazate, the Valley of Roses blooms every April and May with millions of Damascus roses used to produce Morocco's finest rose water and rose oil. The Rose Festival in May is one of the most beautiful events in Morocco — flower processions, music, petals everywhere. Even outside festival season the valley is stunning. A worthwhile detour on the road to Merzouga.
🧑🦱
Local tip: The best photographs of Aït Benhaddou are taken from the hill on the opposite (modern village) side of the river — not from inside the ksar. Most tourists photograph from inside looking out. The view from outside looking across the river at the whole ksar is the one you've seen in films.
🍜
🍜 Food in Ouarzazate
Desert tagine with dates and almonds — the southern Moroccan version adds dried fruits and almonds to the classic lamb tagine. The sweetness balances beautifully against the cumin and coriander. Find it at any local restaurant for 60–90 MAD.
Fresh Draa Valley dates — the date palms of the Draa Valley produce some of the finest dates in the world. Medjool, Boufeggous, Khalt — each variety different in texture and sweetness. Buy directly from roadside vendors on the Draa Valley drive for 20–40 MAD per kilo. Infinitely better than packaged dates.
Amlou — argan oil, roasted almonds and honey ground together into a paste. The breakfast of the south. Eaten with tafernout bread (baked in a clay oven) for a breakfast that costs 20–30 MAD and tastes extraordinary.
Tifoultoute Kasbah restaurant — lunch with a Lawrence of Arabia view. Traditional Moroccan menu in a genuine kasbah setting, 10km from the city. Around 80–120 MAD for a full meal.
Restaurant Es Salam — the most reliable local restaurant in the city center. Tagines, couscous, harira — all good, all affordable at 50–80 MAD. No tourist markup.

🚌 How to get to Ouarzazate
From Marrakech by car (recommended): 3.5 hours via the Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass at 2,260 metres. This is one of the most spectacular mountain drives in Africa — hairpin bends, Atlas views, Berber villages clinging to cliffsides. Don't rush it. Stop at the pass for photos and tea. Rent a car in Marrakech from around 300–400 MAD/day.
From Marrakech by bus: CTM — 4 hours, 90 MAD. Several departures daily. The bus goes over the same mountain pass — take a window seat on the right side heading south.
By plane: Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ) has direct flights from Casablanca with Royal Air Maroc — about 1 hour. Taxis from the airport to city center cost around 50 MAD. Worth it if you're short on time.
As part of a Sahara road trip: Most travelers combine Ouarzazate with Aït Benhaddou, the Dades Gorges and Merzouga on a 3–5 day road trip from Marrakech. Ouarzazate is the first major stop heading south — don't skip it.
🧑🦱
Local tip: If driving from Marrakech, stop at Aït Benhaddou on your way in (arriving from the north puts you there at the right time of day). Don't save it for a separate day trip — you pass within 500 metres of it on the main road.
